ART 1035 Introduction to Art
Art Project: Color Wheel

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Distinguish between various materials, processes, and methods in the production of art objects.
  2. Identify the characteristics of different art forms and distinguish one from another.

Required Materials:

  1. 9x12 or 11x14 mixed media sketchbook
  2. Watercolor Paint Set
  3. Ruler
  4. Round object for tracing
  5. Marker

Directions:

  1. Trace a round object onto the paper. A plate works well for this.
  2. Divide the circle into twelve equal parts.
  3. Paint each section of the color wheel in the correct order:
    1. Red, Red-Orange, Orange, Yellow-Orange, Yellow, Yellow-Green, Green, Blue-Green, Blue, Blue-Violet, Violet, Red-Violet
  4. Your paint set should have the primary and secondary colors, but you will have to mix colors to get the tertiary colors.
  5. Label each color once the paint is dry.
  6. Label the following color schemes on your color wheel.
    1. Monochromatic
    2. Complementary
    3. Analogous
  7. Take a photograph of your final color wheel and post it to the assignment.

You will be graded on effort, not skill. I have provided a model for the color wheel but have not labeled the color schemes.
